From castle to castle

… such a concentration of castles and castle ruins is hard to find outside the Dahn Rockland. All in all there are 15 in our region; among them the largest castle complex of the Palatinate, the triple castle of Altdahn-Grafendahn-Tanstein, or  the highest ruins in the Palatinate, the Wegelnburg, or the rock castle of the legendary robber knight Hans Trapp, Bewartstein castle, or the mythical Wasigenstein, or, or, or …

In nearby France the mighty Fleckenstein fortress attracts big and small explorers and conquerors. Close by, at Gimbelhof, is a German-French castle playground.

Everyone discovers the legendary castles of the Dahn Rockland in their own way: Children may dream of playing knight in shining armour, adults may rather think of the eventful history of this region that has always been a border area. Others will simply enjoy the often beautiful view from up there, or they may use these mystic places for a little picnic. Museums at Altdahn, Bewartstein and Fleckenstein give you a glimpse of everyday life in the Middle Ages.

The Seven Castle Tour

How about hiking to seven castles in one day: Wegelnburg, Hohenburg, Löwenstein, Fleckenstein, Froensburg, Wasigenstein and Blumenstein. The Seven Castle Tour has a length of 20 kilometres. Its route leads you on both sides of the German-French border, through the biosphere reserve Palatinate Forest/Northern Vosges. Starting points are the villages of Schönau or Nothweiler. If seven castles seem a bit much, you can easily reduce the route to a more comfortable 10 or 15 kilometres.

The Dahn circular hiking trail

The Dahn circular hiking trail takes the hiker not only to a number of red sandstone rocks (e.g. Maiden’s Jump, Singer’s Rock or Watch Rock), but also to the triple castle of Altdahn-Grafendahn-Tanstein, the mightiest rock castle in the Palatinate, and to Neudahn castle and the Moosbachtal nature reserve. From the “Haus des Gastes” in Dahn just follow the “DRW” sign.

Our tip:
